Karalliyadde Banḍāra was King of Kandy, who ruled from 1551 to 1581. During his reign Banḍāra publicly embraced Catholicism , brought to the island by the Portuguese . He and his infant daughter princess Kusumāsana Devi fled the kingdom with his retinue.

King Vimaladharmasuriya is regarded by some historians as the Kandyan Kingdom's second founder, responsible for its revival. He was baptized under the Portuguese name of Dom João da Austria. In 1594 he married Princess Kusmasana Devi who, as Dona Catherina, was put forward by the Portuguese as the rightful claimant to the throne and became king.

The king went to Hanguranketha and hid there for safety. Battles continued for months and the king wanted peace with the Dutch due to the widening of internal issues of the Kingdom of Kandy. Taking advantage of this opportunity the Dutch forwarded a treaty biased towards the themselves. The king, having no other option signed the treaty in 1766.
