The Railway Series is a series of British books about a railway known as the North Western Railway, located on the fictional Island of Sodor. There are 42 books in the series, the first published in May 1945 by the Rev. Wilbert Awdry. Awdry wrote 26 books; the final one being written in October 1972.
The final book of the series was Thomas and his Friends. Many special and annual books were written that were not a part of the book series, such as The Island of Sodor: Its People, History and Railways, a companion book alongside the series. Other special books include expanded versions of Railway Series stories, such as Thomas Comes to Breakfast.
Thomas & Friends is a British children's television series based on The Railway Series, created by the Rev. W. Awdry, and was first broadcast in 1984 alongside Shining Time Station until the end of 2021.
