Championship 2 became the NIFL Premier Intermediate League, retaining its intermediate status. [ 4 ] The second level in Northern Irish football was known as the B Division from 1951 to 1995, the Irish League First Division from 1995 to 2003, the Irish First Division from 2003 to 2008, and the IFA Championship from 2008 to 2013.
The league consisted of twelve teams; eleven teams remaining from the previous season, and one team promoted from the NIFL Championship. Loughgall were promoted as champions of the 2022–23 NIFL Championship (returning to the top-flight for the first time since 2007), replacing the 2022–23 NIFL Premiership bottom-placed team Portadown.
The season began on 26 August 2023 and concluded on 27 April 2024. The winners (Limavady United) were promoted to the 2024–25 NIFL Championship. The runners-up (Armagh City) were also promoted after winning the NIFL Championship play-off. The bottom-placed team were relegated to Level 4.
The 16 highest-ranked clubs from the previous season's league system (all 12 NIFL Premiership clubs along with the top 4 NIFL Championship clubs) were then seeded in the first round to avoid drawing each other. The first round was the only round of the competition in which seeding is used.
