The cooper test which was designed by Kenneth H. Cooper in 1968 for US military use is a physical fitness test. [1][2][3] In its original form, the point of the test is to run as far as possible within 12 minutes. Pacing is important, as the participant will not cover a maximal distance if they begin with a pace too close to an all out sprint.
It is often used by serious runners as a means of active recovery during interval training. For example, a runner who completes a fast 400 meter repetition at a sub-5-minute mile pace (3 minute km) may drop to an 8-minute mile jogging pace (5 minute km) for a recovery lap.
A four-minute mile is the completion of a mile run (1.6 km) in four minutes or less. It translates to a speed of 15 miles per hour (24 km/h). [1] It is a standard of professional middle distance runners in several cultures. The first four-minute mile is usually attributed to the English athlete Roger Bannister, who ran it in 1954 at age 25, in ...
Speed work is so important when it comes to breaking the four-minute mile barrier because an athlete must run the first three laps in at most 60 seconds each and sprint the final one in even less ...
Fartlek is a middle and long-distance runner's training approach developed in the late 1930s by Swedish Olympian Gösta Holmér. [1] It has been described as a relatively unscientific blending of continuous training (e.g., long slow distance training), with its steady pace of moderate-high intensity aerobic intensity, [2] and interval training, with its “spacing of more intense exercise and ...

That same year he set the world record for the 1,500 meters (3:33.1). In NCAA competition, Ryun was the 1967 NCAA outdoor mile champion. He was also the NCAA indoor mile champion in 1967, 1968, and 1969.
This is a list of American high school students who have run a four-minute mile since the feat was first accomplished in 1964. The first person to run the mile (1,760 yards, or 1,609.344 metres) in under four minutes was Roger Bannister in 1954, in a time of 3:59.4. [1] This barrier would not be broken by a high school student until 1964, when ...
