The word myrmecology was coined by William Morton Wheeler (1865–1937), although human interest in the life of ants goes back to ancient times. The earliest scientific thinking based on observation of ant life was that of Auguste Forel (1848–1931), a Swiss psychologist who initially was interested in ideas of instinct, learning, and society.

William Morton Wheeler was born on March 19, 1865, to parents Julius Morton Wheeler and Caroline Georgiana Wheeler (née Anderson) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. [2]At a young age, Wheeler had an interest in natural history, first being when he observed a moth ensnared in a spiders web; such observation interested Wheeler that he became importunate for more nature lore. In the post-war years Stumper was an associate of zoologist Bert Hölldobler. [8] In addition to his studies on ants he published more than a hundred scientific papers on chemistry between 1923 and 1958, particularly in relation to iron. [9] Stumper died on 15 April 1977 in Luxembourg City. [1]
