A large part of site is now the residential and Resort community of Sunriver, and the rest has been incorporated into the Deschutes National Forest. The only remaining structure from Camp Abbot is the officers' mess hall; now part of the resort and known as the Great Hall, it is used for large conferences and special events.
Sunriver Resort is a luxury resort and residential community in central Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The resort is located at the edge of the high desert, just east of the Cascade Range , in Sunriver , 15 miles (24 km) south of Bend and 180 miles (290 km) south-southeast of Portland .
Sunriver is located on the grounds of the former Camp Abbot, a World War II training facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. The U.S. Army camp opened in 1942, but by June 1944 the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement was razed.
Today, the lake is located within the Deschutes National Forest and serves as one of central Oregon's most popular outdoor recreation sites, with three large campgrounds and two day-use areas along the north, west, and south shores of the lake.
The Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site, part of the system of state parks managed by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, offers seasonal camping opportunities in a wooded tract along the John Day River near Mount Vernon. The park lies between U.S. Route 26 and the river and is 8 miles (13 km) west of the city of John Day. [3]
The Cabin Lake Guard Station is located in the Deschutes National Forest forty miles southeast of Bend, Oregon. It was originally built as a district ranger station, and served as the headquarters for the Fort Rock Ranger District from 1921 until 1945. Throughout most of that time, there were five full-time rangers living and working at the site.
