Gasparilla Island State Park is a Florida State Park located south of Boca Grande on Gasparilla Island off Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound.Activities include swimming and fishing along with shelling, picnicking, and viewing the Historic Port Boca Grande Lighthouse.
Boca Grande Pass, a natural deepwater inlet at the south end of Gasparilla Island, was seen as the perfect place for a deepwater port to simplify the process of shipping phosphate. The Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railway was first chartered in 1897 as the Alafia, Manatee, and Gulf Coast Railroad .
In 1905, harbor dredging began, and a Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad line was constructed, connecting Boca Grande to the outside world. [1] Afterward Gasparilla was an important stop for phosphate shipping, and it remained so until the dredging of the Port of Tampa in the 1970s.
