The island is virtually uninhabited, being home to the 524-acre (212-hectare) Bahia Honda State Park. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Founded in 1961, the park occupies most of the island. [ 2 ] The channel at the island's west end is one of the deepest natural channels in the Florida Keys.

The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge is a derelict railroad bridge in the lower Florida Keys connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key.It was originally part of the Overseas Railway, but the state of Florida purchased it from the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) after the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane and converted it for automobile use as part of the Overseas Highway in 1938. On 19 August 2024 the Florida Department of Environmental Protection announced plans [21] to build golf courses and 350-room lodges on state park lands. [22]In statements to the Tampa Bay Times and in posts to social media, the agency claimed that the construction of a golf course on vulnerable scrub habitat will be done in a way to "minimize habitat impacts".
