The reappearance of Muhammad al-Mahdi is the Twelver eschatological belief in the return of their Hidden Imam in the end of time to establish peace and justice on earth. According to narrations, the murder of Al-Nafs al-Zakiyyah is one of the certain signs of reappearance of Muhammad al-Mahdi. According to hadiths, there are five (or more) certain signs which will happen prior to the reappearance of the twelfth (last) Imam of Shia Islam, al-Mahdi. [12] [13] Al-Shaykh al-Saduq has narrated --from Ja'far al-Sadiq-- that: five signs are decisive before the rising of Qa'im (قائم): Yamani, Sufyani, Heavenly cry (calling) from the sky, The murder of Nafs-e-Zakiyyah and Khasf al-Bayda.
The signs of his (re)appearance are largely common in Shia and Sunni, [2] [3] (although Sunni do not believe the Mahdi has already been born and is in occultation), and the belief in the eschatological Mahdi remains popular among all Muslims, possibly owing to numerous traditions to this effect in canonical Sunni and Shia sources.
The Shia version of the Mahdi will also reappear in Mecca. On the day of ashura (10th of Muharram; the day the third Shi'a imam Husayn ibn Ali was slain), he will stand with the sword of Ali (dhu'l-fiqar) in his hand, [27] between the corner of the Ka'ba and the station of Abraham. Shia will come from all over the world to pledge their loyalty.
The rising of al-Khorasani, [14] or the movement of the Black Standard from the side of Khorasan, [15] [16] is considered to be among the signs of the appearance of the Mahdi. [17] [18] [19] Imam as-Sadiq was reported saying: [20] Coming out of three groups "Sufyani, Khorasani and Yamani" will be in: a year, a month, and a day. —
