An edge city is a term coined by Joel Garreau's in his 1991 book Edge City: Life on the New Frontier, for a place in a metropolitan area, outside cities' original downtowns (thus, in the suburbs or, if within the city limits of the central city, an area of suburban density), with a large concentration of jobs, office space, and retail space.
Cape Girardeau County was organized on October 1, 1812, as one of five original counties in the Missouri Territory after the US made the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. It is named after Ensign Sieur Jean Baptiste de Girardot (also spelled Girardeau or Girardat), a French officer stationed 1704–1720 at Kaskaskia in the Illinois Country of New France.
The Cape Girardeau–Sikeston Combined Statistical Area is made up of three counties in southeastern Missouri and one county in southern Illinois. The statistical area includes one metropolitan area and micropolitan area. As of the 2000 Census, the CSA had a population of 134,051 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 134,567).
