The track was known as Lucas Oil Raceway from 2011 to 2021. In 1958, 15 Indianapolis-area businessmen and racing professionals led by Tom Binford, Frank Dickie, Rodger Ward, and Howard Fieber invested $5,000 each to fund the development of a 267-acre (108 ha) farm tract into a recreational sporting complex that would focus on auto racing.
It was purchased by Lucas Oil in 2004, and then was rebuilt. In 2006, after the conversion renovation, the track reopened as the Lucas Oil Speedway, with new visitor, VIP, and competitor, and track facilities. [1] An artificial lake, Lucas Lake was added to host drag boats and motorboat circuit racing. The boating facility was completed in 2011.

[15] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the 2020 Indianapolis 500 was postponed to August 23, therefore the Carb Night Classic was held on August 21, whereas a revival of the Night Before the 500 race was held on August 22.
