Thief (1981) is the fifteenth major release and second soundtrack album by Tangerine Dream. It is the soundtrack for the 1981 American neo-noir crime film Thief, directed by Michael Mann. [2] It reached No. 43 on the UK Albums Chart in a 3-week run. "Beach Theme" and "Beach Scene" are two different mixes of the same piece.
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and James Caan's brother Ronnie, Thief was screened at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or. It was released in the United States on March 27, 1981, to widespread critical acclaim. Thief earned $11.5 million at the box office, on a $5.5 million budget.
Tangerine Dream's releases have been divided into several eras based on the record label of the time. Tangerine Dream's first releases were on the Ohr label. The Ohr logo was a pink ear, thus fans refer to this era as the Pink Years; this covers Electronic Meditation (1970) to Atem (1973).
