The edifice was built over an eight-year period and was well maintained during both the Ming dynasty, and the Qing dynasty, which followed. [1] The wall was initially built solely from tamped earth. During the Longqing Emperor's period (1568) the wall was strengthened by laying blue bricks on the top and exterior faces of the earthen walls.
Cheng originally meant a castle, fortress, or fortification, but in modern Chinese, the character means city. Today, the site is most commonly known in Chinese as Gugong (故 宮), which means the "Former Palace". The castle occupies a total area of 1.59 square kilometres (0.61 sq mi), with 6 eastern and 3 western passes and walls nearly 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) long.
The former royal residence was the Taiji Palace (太極宮), built in the previous Sui dynasty.[10]In 632, chancellor Ma Zhou charged that the retired Emperor Gaozu was living in Da'an Palace (大安宮) to the west, which he considered an inhospitable place as it was built on low-lying lands of Chang'an that was plagued by dampness and heat during the summer.
