Nacra Sailing is a Dutch company that manufactures a line of small catamaran sailboats, or beachcats. [1] NACRA was founded in 1975 to tap into the market created by Hobie Alter the founder of Hobie Cat, and several other companies offering small fiberglass catamarans designed to be sailed off the beach by a crew of one or two.
Hobie Alter sold the Hobie Cat Company to the Coleman Company in 1975. MacGregor produced primarily small, trailerable sailing yachts, from a 15-foot (4.6 m) catamaran to 17-foot (5.2 m) pocket cruisers, up to 26-foot (7.9 m) water ballasted trailerable sizes. MacGregor has also built a 36-foot (11 m) catamaran , and a 65-foot (20 m) yacht.
One early beachcat, the Pacific cat, appeared in 1960 in California. The Pacific cat was designed by Carter Pyle and was first built in 1960. It was slightly smaller than 19 ft × 8 ft (5.8 m × 2.4 m), and was a solid fiberglass catamaran with a solid core deck and traditional catamaran sail plan.
The Nacra 17 is a performance catamaran used for sailing. It was designed in 2011, went into production in 2012 and has been the focus of multihull sailing at the Olympic Games since its conception. The Nacra has been converted to a sailing hydrofoil for the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris (Marseille) Olympics. [1]
