Independence High School launched in 1986 as a district program. In 1991, it formally became an alternative high school within Roseville Joint Union High School District. In 2001 IHS moved to its current facility, creating a space for flexible instruction and independent study, office spaces for staff and classrooms for students.
Independence High School's instrumental program, led by Professor Dr. Kenneth Ponticelli, includes (as of 2023-2024) Orchestra (the two previously distinct Orchestra 1 and 2-4 classes were merged starting in the 2020-2021 school year) Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. Under the direction of Bob Russell and Dan Smith, the Marching Band was founded.
Independence High School had their first class in 2008, with the first graduating class in 2011. The first all four year graduating class graduated in 2012. The school is well known for hosting The Ready Set and Carly Rae Jepsen as a school spirit competition win from Kelly 95.3. It currently contains an approximate 1,900 of students and staff. [2]
The district will be the largest in Missouri to adopt a four-day week model, with no classes on Mondays.

The 2004 Independence football team ended the year being state champions and selected by USA High School Football as that years national champions. [9] Coach Tom Knotts returned as head coach for the 2005 season, where Independence would go on to win three more state championships in a row, without a loss each of those seasons.
Public schools and those private schools who have opted to join them are expected to open in June and end in April by school year 2026–27. [23] [24] For universities and colleges, the four breaks in their collegiate calendar (three for trimestral institutions) closely match those of the 2021 national basic education calendar.
