Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is a nonprofit government contractor owned by Utah State University.SDL is the sole University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) for the United States Missile Defense Agency; and, is one of 15 UARCs in the nation for the United States Department of Defense.
The flight system has an estimated mass of 560 kg (1,230 lb). The spacecraft is three-axis stabilized, with body-fixed solar arrays. It uses a high-gain antenna in the Ku-band to transmit to the ground through the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) geostationary system. Ball also performed the testing and flight system integration.
Flight operations, integration, and testing were from Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. The telescope was built by Space Dynamics Laboratory in Utah. Premature ejection of the spacecraft aperture cover led to depletion of the solid hydrogen shortly after launch, ending the primary science mission.
AWE was built by the Utah State University Space Dynamics Laboratory, and the mission is led by Michael Taylor of Utah State University. [1] NASA selected AWE as an Explorers Program Mission of Opportunity in February 2019. [2] [3] The SpaceX CRS-29 spacecraft carrying AWE was successfully launched on 10 November 2023.
