Kiptopeke State Park is a state park located in the southern end of the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the Delmarva Peninsula in Northampton County, near Cape Charles.The park offers recreational access to the brackish waters of the Chesapeake Bay with its shoreline, beach, boat ramps and piers, as well as unique migratory bird habitat along the East Coast flyway.
The Virginia Dept. of Highways has carried the Pocahontas name on to the newest ferry built for the Jamestown-Scotland wharf run on the James R. The old ferry terminal at Kiptopeke is now a state park and most of the old ferrying is still in use for park use. The Little Creek terminal is pretty much gone and what is left is commercial. [8]
In 1951, the northern terminus in Delmarva was relocated to a location now within Kiptopeke State Park. US 13 passes to the east of Kiptopeke State Park, heading farther east from the bay, and comes to an intersection with SR 704 that provides access to the community of Kiptopeke and the state park to the west. The route continues north through rural areas with some development, coming to an intersection with SR 683.
The Gap Filler support buildings at Z-56A (Temperanceville, VA) and Z-56C (Elizabeth City, NC) remain, although the tower and radar are gone. Z-56B (Bethany Beach, DE) is now part of a golf course. One fire control tower from Fort John Custis remains near the former runway; another remains north of Kiptopeke State Park.
