SR 120 starts at a junction with US 79/SR 76 near Big Rock.The highway goes north for a short distance before turning west to pass along the north side of Big Rock. SR 120 then winds its way southwest before turning north again to pass through Bumpus Mills before coming to an end at the Kentucky state line, where it continues as Kentucky Route 139 (KY 139) upon entry into Trigg County, Kentucky.

Until the 2000s, SR 461 was signed as SR 49. [4] Although the road south of the LBL boundary became designated as SR 461 after the USDA Forest Service took over ownership of LBL, some road maps still identify the entire Tennessee section of the trace as SR 49.
The Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway, also known as "The Trace," is the major north–south roadway that traverses the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in two counties in western Kentucky and northwestern Stewart County in northwest Middle Tennessee. [2] It is estimated to be 43.1 miles (69.4 km) in length.
