The Elizabeth settlement is one of the ten Metis settlements that were created in 1939 thanks to the Metis Betterment Act of 1938. [4] These settlements were established for the Metis individuals living in the province of Manitoba who were left without a land base after the 1871 census. [ 7 ]
In 2022 the Metis National Council filed a lawsuit against its former president and the Manitoba Metis Federation alleging financial malfeasance, irregularities and questionable contracts. The lawsuit alleges Chartrand and former leadership made deals to financially benefit themselves. The national council is seeking $15 million in damages.
