A member of the Republican Party, he served as the 50th attorney general of Ohio from 2011 to 2019, in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1983 to 1991, and in the U.S. Senate from 1995 to 2007.
He was appointed to the Senate in 2001 and won re-election for his first full term in 2002. In 2006, he was elected to the post again before reaching the term limit in 2011.
