Formerly known as Guangdong Institute of Nationalities (GDIN; 广东民族学院), the university was approved by the State Education Commission in Oct. 1957 [8] [9] and then they moved to Hainan in 1961.The campus was totally closed due to the Cultural Revolution.After that, The school reopened on April 25, 1974, and returned to Guangzhou campus in 1978.

A college is NOT a university. These are two different words in English, just as they are in Chinese. A college is a 学院 in Chinese and it is in EVERY POSSIBLE WAY inferior to a genuine university, i.e. a 大学. A 学院 is compounded of 学 = study, learning, and 院 = space, environment, therefore: a school, a college.
