Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae, [1] Satomi Satō (child) [2] (Japanese); Zach Aguilar, [3] Allegra Clark (child) [4] (English) Tanjiro Kamado (竈門 炭治郎, Kamado Tanjirō) is the oldest son of charcoal sellers Tanjuro and Kie, whose family was killed by Muzan Kibutsuji while he was away selling charcoal; his sister Nezuko survived, but was turned into a demon.
Tanjiro Kamado lives a quiet, peaceful life with his family in the snowy mountains of Japan, providing for them by selling charcoal at the nearby town. One day, he returns home and finds his entire family slaughtered in a demon attack, with the exception of his younger sister, Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon herself.
It follows teenage Tanjiro Kamado, who strives to become a Demon Slayer after his family was slaughtered and his younger sister, Nezuko, is turned into a demon. The series' first season premiered in April 2019, having aired on Tokyo MX and other networks, while from the second season onwards it has aired on Fuji TV .
Early sketches of Nezuko and Tanjiro. Tanjiro Kamado originates from Koyoharu Gotouge's ideas involving a one-shot with Japanese motifs. Tatsuhiko Katayama, their editor, was worried about the one-shot crusade being too dark for the young demographic and asked Gotouge if they could write another type of the main character who would be "brighter". Tanjiro Kamado, his demonic younger sister Nezuko, and his friends Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira board the Mugen Train [N 1] to assist the Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku in his mission to hunt for a demon that has caused 40 people to go missing. Soon after boarding, they are attacked by two demons which Kyojuro quickly kills.

While relaxing in hot springs, Tanjiro and Nezuko encounter Genya, Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa's younger brother and fellow Demon Slayer, who angrily strikes Tanjiro and storms off. Back at the village, Mitsuri hints at Tanjiro about a "secret weapon" hidden in the village that can make him stronger and bids farewell to the siblings.
Tanjiro also receives a letter from Tamayo, who tells him that her tests with the blood samples from the Twelve Kizuki have been successful in turning demons back to humans. In another mission, Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro and Genya's older brother Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa investigate an abandoned temple inhabited by demons.
