Winona is a city in and the county seat of Montgomery County, Mississippi, United States. [6] The population was 4,505 at the 2020 census , [ 4 ] down from 5,043 in 2010 . Winona is known in the local area as "The Crossroads"; the intersection of U.S. Interstate 55 and U.S. Highway 51 and 82 run through here.

Montgomery County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi.As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,822. [1] Its county seat is Winona. [2]The county is said to be named in honor either of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada, or for Montgomery County, Tennessee, from which an early settler came.
The property was built in 1890 by Dr. Thomas Washborn and was visited for its supposed curative properties. [2] Prior to 1916 it had well houses, bath houses, guest cottages, a dance pavilion, and gambling hall. [2] The springs were listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 8, 2000.
At one time the district allowed students residing there to transfer to other nearby school districts, including the Winona schools, schools in Grenada, and schools in French Camp. In 2001 the district ended that policy. [5] The district attempted to stop the merger with Winona schools with a restraining order in 2017. [6]
There were a total of 1,303 students enrolled in the Winona Separate School District during the 2007–2008 school year. The makeup of the district was 47% female and 53% male. The racial makeup of the district was 53.95% African American, 45.28% White, 0.31% Hispanic, and 0.46% Asian.
