The women's basketball poll began during the 1976–77 season, and was initially compiled by Mel Greenberg and published by The Philadelphia Inquirer.At first, it was a poll of coaches conducted via telephone, where coaches identified top teams and a list of the Top 20 teams was produced.
The 2022–23 NCAA Division I women's basketball season began on November 7, 2022. The regular season ended on March 12, 2023, with the 2023 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament beginning on March 14 and ending with the championship game at American Airlines Center in Dallas on April 2.
The SIAC currently sponsors 14 sports, eight for men and six for women. Men's volleyball, a Division I sport, became the 14th SIAC sport in the 2020–21 school year; play was intended to start in January 2021 [4] but was delayed to 2022 due to COVID-19 issues.
