Each size has an ampacity that the conductor can handle depending on the insulation that is around the wire. For instance a #10 wire is rated, generally 30 amps while a #12 is 20 amps and 14 is 15 amps. You are correct that a 12/2 means 2 #12 wires with a bare wire all #12AWG. "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to ...
Here's a chart of NM and UF cable diameters that has been used by a lot of people to determine conduit fill when pulling NM or UF in raceway: 14-2 NMB .1018. 12-2 NMB .1320. 10-2 NMB .1917. 8-2 NMB .2942. 6-2 NMB .3664.
Unless you want to change the circuit's OCPD to 15 amps, the Code makes no exception for want you want to do and you must use 12-2 or be in violation. So yes the 14-2 will make you a Hackwagon. With that said, we all know that there is theoretically no way the 14-2 would ever be loaded beyond its rating in this case, but it still is ...
L1 and L2 come in from the source. L1 goes to the common on the safety switch. From the N.C. terminal it goes to the L2 terminal on the contactor. There's a wire that is tapped off of L2 terminal on the contactor to go to 3 on the push button switch. Then, 4 from the switch gots to A1 on the contactor (the coil).
14/2 or 14/3 from the wall switch to the lighting/ceiling fan outlet. #12/2 or 12/3 on everything else. 20 amp circuit breakers only no 15 amph breakers. Most home owners can't tell the difference between #14 and #12. When they replace a breaker themselves or are having trips, they just replace that 15 with a 20.
table 310.15 (B) (3) (a) and the provisions of 310.15 (A) (2), Exception, shall not apply. Where more than two NM cables containing two or. more current-carrying conductors are installed in contact. with thermal insulation without maintaining spacing be-. tween cables, the allowable ampacity of each conductor.
The color code that was introduced, which continues to be used today is as follows: 14 AWG – White. 12 AWG – Yellow. 10 AWG – Orange. 8 AWG – Black. 6 AWG – Black . This color coding system was developed to aid those who sell, install, and inspect Type NM-B cable so that the cable size can easily be identified, to reduce mistakes ...
Recently had an electrician install an inlet box and interlock for a portable generator. the generator in question is rated for 12,500 Peak/9,500 Running watts and has a receptacle for a 50 amp plug. After install was done, I noticed that the inlet box was only rated for 30 amps and the wiring from the inlet box to the breaker was 8-3awg with a ...

It's capable of carrying more amps (more surface area), less likely to get damaged in a pull, easier to handle, and weighs less than solid wire. Ask where in the NEC that it says solid is better than stranded, not going to happen.
