In a little more than two years the name changed from The Missoula & Cedar Creek Pioneer (Sept. 1870 - Jan. 1871), to the Missoula Pioneer (Jan. - Nov. 1871), to The Pioneer (Nov. 1871 - Nov. 1872), to The Montana Pioneer (Dec. 1872 - Feb. 1873), before finally becoming the Weekly Missoulian in February 1873.
The Missoula Independent was a free weekly alternative newspaper in Missoula, Montana, United States. It was acquired by Lee Enterprises , owner of the daily Missoulian , in 2017. [ 2 ] On September 11, 2018, Lee Enterprises shut down the Independent without notice.

It is the largest metropolitan area between Boise, Idaho, and Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and between Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, [4] and Billings, Montana.
The Montana Free Press was founded in 2016 by journalist John S. Adams, [3] who had previously worked as the capital bureau chief for The Great Falls Tribune in 2015. Prior to both, Adams was a staff reporter at the Missoula Independent .
