The Church of the Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic church in Hove, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. It is the oldest of Hove's three Roman Catholic churches, and one of eleven in the city area. It has been designated a Grade II Listed building. [1]

The original parish church of Hove (and later Hove-cum-Preston, a combined parish that existed from 1531 [55] to 1878 [56]) was of 12th-century origin, [57] but fell into disrepair and was rebuilt by George Basevi in neo-Norman style in the 1830s after the population of Hove started to grow. Hove's first Roman Catholic church was the Church of the Sacred Heart on Norton Road. Early in the 20th century, its priest paid £600 for a plot of land on Portland Road—a main road running westwards from Hove towards Aldrington and Portslade—with the intention of establishing a new church there. The Church of the Sacred Heart was registered for worship in accordance with the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 on 13 June 1878; its number on the register is 24088. [21] It was also registered for the solemnisation of marriages on 10 February 1903 under the terms of the Marriage Act 1836. [22]
