Bujumbura is the location for the city's multisport Intwari stadium. Mainly used for football matches, it is the country's largest stadium with 22,000 seats. The city is also home to many basketball and tennis courts, as well as a multitude of indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

In the northeast it borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo. To the north it borders Bubanza Province, to east it borders Muramvya Province and Mwaro Province, and to the south it borders Bururi Province. It encloses Bujumbura Mairie Province around the northwest corner of Lake Tanganyika. In the west it is in the Imbo natural region.
The airport is in the extreme northwest of Bujumbura Mairie Province.It is bounded by Bujumbura Rural Province to the north and west, by the RN4 coastal highway running along the shore of Lake Tanganyika to the south, and by the Mutimbuzi River and the RN5 highway to the east.
