The Territorial Army (TA) is a military reserve force composed of part-time volunteers who provide support services to the Indian Army. It consists of officers , junior commissioned officers , non-commissioned officers and other personnel who hold ranks identical to those in the Indian Army, and also maintains civilian occupations.

When the Territorial Force (TF) was created in 1908 it was a part-time volunteer force intended for home defence when the Regular British Expeditionary Force (BEF) was deployed overseas, although a small number of TF units had volunteered for 'Imperial Service'.
The following year the TF was reorganised as the Territorial Army (TA). The battalion formed part of 132nd (Middlesex and Sussex) Brigade in 44th (Home Counties) Division. [4] [7] [42] For three years from January 1927 the battalion's Regular Army adjutant was Capt Brian Horrocks while he was studying for entry to the Staff College, Camberley. [43]

The regiment had its origins in 317 (Middlesex) Independent Anti-Aircraft Searchlight Company, one of a number of air defence companies of the Royal Engineers formed in the Home counties by the Territorial Army during 1924. 317 AASL Company, based at Hendon, was grouped with two companies from Kent in the Kent & Middlesex Group.

The 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion, Cheshire Regiment (3 CHESHIRE) was a part-time infantry battalion based in Cheshire, England and tasked with home defence during its tenure. The battalion was formed in the latter part of the Cold War, but later disbanded forming two companies in the new local Territorial Army (TA) regiment, the King's and Cheshire Regiment.
The 4th Battalion, Yorkshire Volunteers (4 YORKS) was an infantry battalion of Yorkshire's only Territorial Army (TA) regiment, and existed for just around four years before amalgamating with another battalion of the Yorkshire Volunteers.
