In 1953, T. M. A. Pai founded India's first private medical school, the Kasturba Medical College, and five years later the Manipal Institute of Technology was established. Initially, degrees were awarded by Karnataka University, Dharwad and later by the University of Mysore. From 1980 to 1993 they were awarded by Mangalore University.
In 1961, he returned to Manipal to become the administrator of Kasturba Hospital, the teaching hospital of Kasturba Medical College.After the death of his father T. M. A. Pai in 1979, he became the head of the group and later took over as chancellor in due course Chancellor of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education [2] and the Chairman of the Manipal Education and Medical Group. Tonse Madhava Ananth Pai (30 April 1898 – 29 May 1979), was an Indian physician, educationist, banker and philanthropist, most well-known for building the university town of Manipal, India. He was the first to start a private, self-financing medical college offering MBBS in India.
