The I Ching or Yijing (Chinese: 易經, Mandarin: [î tɕíŋ] ⓘ), usually translated Book of Changes or Classic of Changes, is an ancient Chinese divination text that is among the oldest of the Chinese classics. The I Ching was originally a divination manual in the Western Zhou period (1000–750 BC).

Yijing (635–713 CE), formerly romanized as I-ching or I-tsing, [1] born Zhang Wenming, was a Tang-era Chinese Buddhist monk famed as a traveller and translator. His account of his travels are an important source for the history of the medieval kingdoms along the sea route between China and India, especially Srivijaya in Indonesia .

Dick used the I Ching when writing The Man in the High Castle and including it in the story as a theme.
They are also known as jing, qi and shen (Chinese: 精氣神; pinyin: jīng-qì-shén; Wade–Giles: ching ch'i shen; "essence, breath, and spirit"). The French sinologist Despeux summarizes: Jing , qi , and shen are three of the main notions shared by Taoism and Chinese culture alike.
