The race was inaugurated in 1992 [1] and named in honor of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Bayakoa [2] who had won the 1989 Grade I Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park. In 1993 event was run over a longer distance of 1 + 1 ⁄ 8 miles and in 1995 the event was not held. [1] The event was upgraded to a Grade III event in 2015. [3]

Bayakoa was then shipped to Oaklawn Park in Arkansas for the Grade I Apple Blossom Handicap on April 19. She raced wide for much of the race but still won by four lengths over Goodbye Halo. Returning to California, she won the Hawthorne Handicap on May 20 by 4 + 1 ⁄ 2 lengths, then the Milady Handicap on June 17 by 1 length.
