During the 1920s there was rapid development in the design of diesel engines. In 1929 a Gardner "4L2" marine engine was fitted into a Lancia bus. This conversion was successful and prompted Gardner to introduce the "LW" series of diesel engines, designed especially for road vehicles but later modified and supplied as a marine engine with factory-fitted bilge pumps.
Compared to glow plug engines, model diesel engines exhibit much higher fuel economy, thus increasing endurance for the amount of fuel carried. They also exhibit higher torque, enabling the turning of a larger or higher pitched propeller at lower speed, and reducing compression will compensate for the earlier ignition at this lower speed.
In 2010, the 1.4 L MultiAir engine won the International Engine of the Year [8] as well as Popular Science's Best of What's New. [1] In the same year, the Fiat SGE engine (0.9 L turbocharged and 1.0 L naturally aspirated TwinAir units), also using MultiAir technology, was launched in the Fiat 500.
The F20C produces the highest specific power output for any naturally aspirated piston engine in a car priced under US$100,000, at 125 hp (126.7 PS; 93.2 kW) per liter, ahead of the SR16VE N1 found in the homologation version of the JDM Nissan Pulsar producing 197 bhp (147 kW; 200 PS) for a specific power of 123.45 bhp (92.1 kW; 125.2 PS) per ...
The 20 engines of the 5800 series were identical but not auto-fitted, and less widely spread. In 1946, the 4800 series 0-4-2Ts were renumbered into the 1400 range to make way for some of the 2800 class 2-8-0s which were converted to oil-burning and renumbered in the 4800 range.
The first Soviet mass-produced diesel locomotive, TE3, was powered by a 1470 kW (2000 hp) 2D100 engine, direct descendant of the marine 38 8-1/8 engine. The TE3 was produced in high numbers (up to 7600 units), and proved to be a reliable mainline freight locomotive. Later this engine evolved to the turbocharged 10D100, rated at 2200 kW (3000 hp).
