In the 1970s the Selangor state government established the Petaling District Council (Majlis Daerah Petaling, MDP) under section 4 of the Local Government Act 1976.In 1994, the state government decided to upgrade the authority to the status of a municipal council (majlis perbandaran), and rename it the Subang Jaya Municipal Council.

The Petaling Jaya City Council (Malay: Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya, abbreviated MBPJ) is the city council which administers the city of Petaling Jaya in the state of Selangor, Malaysia.
USJ has grown rapidly in recent years but has paid a price in terms of traffic congestions and a shortage of parking spaces. The main commercial hubs in USJ are USJ Taipan (a.k.a. USJ 10) and Subang Business Centre USJ 9 respectively.
Petaling Jaya Stadium was opened in 1996 and has a capacity of 25,000. It was built in time for the 1998 Commonwealth Games and hosted the Games' rugby union matches. The stadium previously served as the home to MPPJ FC, the first club in Malaysian football competition to win the Malaysia Cup until its quietus in August 2006.
