State University of Jakarta (Indonesian: Universitas Negeri Jakarta, commonly abbreviated as UNJ) is a public university in Jakarta, Indonesia. Founded in 1964 as the Jakarta Institute of Teaching and Education ( IKIP Jakarta ), it was later converted into a state university by the Indonesian government in 1999.
On August 25, 1998, Politeknik Universitas Indonesia was renamed Politeknik Negeri Jakarta, granting it autonomous status to manage its own statutes as per the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 207/O/1998. Despite the change, the academic community of PNJ maintains a harmonious relationship with Universitas Indonesia.
On June 1, 2007, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. For half a century, the university has carried out its mandate as an institution of learning and transmitting knowledge, a research institution that supports the process of nation building, and as an institution devoted to the community that provides programs to improve social welfare.
STKIP PGRI Jakarta (Indonesian: Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan Dan Ilmu Pendidikan Persatuan Guru Republik Indonesia) (English: College of Teacher Training and Teacher's Education Association of the Republic of Indonesia) officially became Indraprasta PGRI University on November 6, 2004, based on SK Mendiknas RI No.142/D/O/2004 by the Ministry of National Education of Indonesia.
The university was declared on 28 October 1966, following the merger of the older Pancasila University which was itself founded in 1963 and the Bung Karno University which was founded in 1964 [1] (not to be mistaken with another identically named university founded in 1999), partially due to the pressure from the Suharto government against symbolism of the former president.
