The former Midland League clubs formed the new Premier Division which sits at step 7 of non-league football (or level 11 of the English football league system), a feeder league to the National League System. The former Staffordshire County League sides formed Division One and Division Two, which are at levels 12 and 13 of English football.
During that time they won promotion form Division One in 1971–72 but they never finished higher than fourth until they left the league during the 1987–88 season to join the Staffordshire County League (South).
The club was established in 1946. In 1987, they joined the Northern Premier League Division One in its first season, and at their height were one of the best non-league teams in North Staffordshire rivalling Leek Town for the top position in the pyramid. Their one major honour came in 1986 when they won the Staffordshire Senior Cup.

Downing departed the club in February 2018 with the club rooted to the bottom of the division. Jake Robinson and Paul Snape took the helm and guided the club to what was believed to be safety in a 20th-place finish. The club fell foul to the restructure of step 6 and 5 and were relegated to the Staffordshire Senior League Premier.
