A numeric keypad, number pad, numpad, or ten key, [1] [2] [3] is the palm-sized, usually-17-key section of a standard computer keyboard, usually on the far right. It provides calculator -style efficiency for entering numbers.
The first key-activated mechanical calculators and many cash registers used "parallel" keys with one column of 0 to 9 for each position the machine could use. A smaller, 10-key input first started on the Standard Adding Machine in 1901. [9] The calculator had the digit keys arranged in one row, with zero on the left, and 9 on the right.
[5] Meanwhile, a 1960 paper – just five years later – refers to today's common calculator layout as "the arrangement frequently found in ten-key adding machines". [3] In any case, Bell Labs' testing found that the telephone layout with 1, 2, and 3 on the top row, was slightly faster in use than the calculator layout with them in the bottom row.
By adding pigments to the natural silicone rubber, it is possible to create keys in various colors which can be molded together (Flowing colors) during the compression process to form a multi key keypad. Individual legends can be printed on to a key allowing full customization of the keypad for its application.
With the Alt key, it switched to SysRq, a different keycode. Num Lock toggles the state of the numeric keypad. When off, the keypad acts as arrow and navigational keys. When on, it is a 10-key number pad similar to a standard calculator. Preferences vary so much that a favorite default for this key can often be configured in the BIOS.
