SBI Route 57 was the current US 41 and IL 50 from Highland Park to Chicago. [4] In 1949 it was moved to Hull to Quincy, following much of the same alignment it does today. As late as 1962, it was moved from its original alignment following 8th Street, Jackson Street, and 12th street to its current alignment following Gardner Expressway and 3rd Street.

At the eastern end of the Quincy Memorial Bridge, eastbound US 24 overlaps Illinois Route 57 (IL 57) northbound (4th Street) for two blocks before IL 57 ends at IL 104 (Broadway) and westbound US 24 turns off onto the bridge at the northern terminus of IL 57. US 24 continues north at IL 104 and serves only the northwestern portion of Quincy.

Bridge weight plates refer to SBI numbers instead of posted route numbers as well. For example, bridge plates along old US-66 refer to the route as "SBI-4" When the United States Numbered Highway System was started in 1926, the US numbers were just tacked onto the existing IL/SBI number unless the US Route was routed along a new route.

I-39/US-51 join I-90, making US 51 one of the few toll highways in Illinois that is a U.S. Highway. US 51 exits I-39/I-90 just a mile south of the Wisconsin state line. Then US 51 follows Illinois Route 75 (IL 75) west to the intersection of IL 251, and then turns north through South Beloit, Illinois to enter Wisconsin.
