Dunsborough is a coastal town in the South West of Western Australia, 254 kilometres (158 mi) south of Perth, on the shores of Geographe Bay. Dunsborough is a popular tourist destination for Western Australians; in 1999 it was voted the state's best tourist destination and in 2013 awarded the Top Tourism Award for Population Under 5,000.
The zoo was likely created to lure families to the area to sell real estate to. It is believed that the temporary zoos of Hialeah and Country Club Estates, run by Curtiss & Bright became the foundation for the Opa-Locka zoo. The zoo was managed by Guarling Frederick (G. F.) Sirman, who built the original zoo for Curtiss.

Average maxima vary from 29.9 °C (85.8 °F) in January to 15.8 °C (60.4 °F) in July, while average minima fluctuate between 13.5 °C (56.3 °F) in February and 4.8 °C (40.6 °F) in July.
