According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Glen Ellyn has a total area of 7.01 square miles (18.16 km 2), of which 6.85 square miles (17.74 km 2) (or 97.70%) is land and 0.16 square miles (0.41 km 2) (or 2.30%) is water.
The village changed its name to Prospect Park in 1874 and to Glen Ellyn in 1891. The latter name change was prompted by the development of the Glen Ellyn Hotel & Springs Company, a resort overlooking the nearby lake.
