The U-shaped second-storey balcony was originally made up wooden slats of makeshift nature which the women were able to see through very clearly.
Over the years, as Jewish immigration to Singapore increased, the Maghain Aboth Synagogue began to become overcrowded during services. Because of friction between the Sephardic and Ashkenazi communities over how the services should be conducted, Sir Manasseh Meyer decided to build a new synagogue, Chesed-El Synagogue, completed in 1905.
His greatest works were within the Jewish community where he was the Baghdadi Jews of Singapore's most generous benefactor. Jews responsible for erecting Singapore's two synagogues — Maghain Aboth Synagogue and Chesed-El Synagogue. Chesed-El, his personal favourite, was opened in 1905 for the use of his family and others Baghdadi Jewish families.
