Under the image there should be a set of numbers in the form "NNNNxMMMM." This is the size of the image in pixels. If these numbers do not appear, then the image is smaller than the limit you specified for display in the "Files" pane in your preferences. If you did not adjust that limit, the default size is 800x600 pixels.
The available values for thumbnail size in Preferences (on the Appearance tab) are 120px, 150px, 180px, 200px, 220px (default), 250px, 300px, and 400px. As explained at Wikipedia:Extended image syntax § Size, upright=Factor will "adjust a thumbnail's size to Factor times the default thumbnail size, rounding the result to the nearest multiple of 10".
Size needs can differ much according to display hardware (the monitor). Hence it is good practice to show a directory (tree-like structure) of thumbnails, which link to images in high resolution. If the image display is static, then choose a filesize, which is possible to display within a few seconds, preferably immediately.
Specifying a size does not just change the apparent image size using HTML; it actually generates a resized version of the image on the fly and links to it appropriately. This happens whether or not you specify the size in conjunction with "thumb". This means the server does all the work of changing the image size, not the web browser of the user.
The Image Size dialog can be used as an image calculator of sorts. For example, a 1600 × 1200 image with a resolution of 200 ppi will produce a printed image of 8 × 6 inches. The same image with 400 ppi will produce a printed image of 4 × 3 inches. Change the resolution to 800 ppi, and the same image now prints out at 2 × 1.5 inches.
Check size Although it may only need to appear small in the encyclopedia article, bear in mind that people might need an image in high resolution. The default minimum size for consideration as a Commons featured picture is 2 megapixels, for example. The current maximum file size you can upload is 100MB.
