Paresthesias are usually painless and can occur anywhere on the body, but most commonly occur in the arms and legs. [1] The most familiar kind of paresthesia is the sensation known as "pins and needles" after having a limb "fall asleep". A less well-known and uncommon paresthesia is formication, the sensation of insects crawling on the skin.
Because of its similarities to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), May–Thurner syndrome is rarely diagnosed amongst the general population. In this condition, the right iliac artery sequesters and compresses the left common iliac vein against the lumbar section of the spine, [5] resulting in swelling of the legs and ankles, pain, tingling, and/or numbness in the legs and feet. [6]
Examples of paresthesias (abnormal sensations but not unpleasant) and dysthesias (abnormal sensations that are unpleasant) are burning, tingling, numbness, stinging, hypersensitivity, and itching. The symptom intensity can be mild to severe in a way that limits function due to pain. [5] Activity and position can affect the symptoms.
Nerve compression syndrome, or compression neuropathy, or nerve entrapment syndrome, is a medical condition caused by chronic, direct pressure on a peripheral nerve. [1] It is known colloquially as a trapped nerve, though this may also refer to nerve root compression (by a herniated disc, for example).

These symptoms include tenderness, tingling and numbness initiating in low back and buttock area and then radiating down to the thigh and to the leg. [72]

Weakness or numbness may occur in various parts of the affected leg and foot. [3] About 90% of sciatica is due to a spinal disc herniation pressing on one of the lumbar or sacral nerve roots. [4] Spondylolisthesis, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, pelvic tumors, and pregnancy are other possible causes of sciatica. [3]
