The Directorate General, Defence Estates (abbreviate as: DGDE) is the main Indian regulatory and advisory body that provides inputs on matters of Cantonments and defence land matters to the Ministry of Defence and service headquarters i.e, Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Air Force and other organizations under Ministry of Defence of Government of India.
Between April 2015 and March 2016, India allocated $40 billion to Defence Services, $10 billion to Defence (Civil Estimates) and another $10 billion to the Home Ministry for Paramilitary and CAPF forces – a total allocation for defence and security of about $60 billion for the financial year 2015–16.
The Ministry of Defence is provided advice on matters related to Defence Lands and Cantonments by DGDE. The Cantonments Act, 2006, its rules and regulations etc. are implemented under supervision of DGDE. The land and building requirement of Ministry of Defence is fulfilled by the Directorate General through acquisitions, requisition or hiring. [4]
