The unrest began when the Catholic Bishop Francis Kenrick petitioned the Public School Board to allow use of the Douay-Rheims (Catholic) translation of the Bible by Catholic students, instead of forcing them to use the Authorized (King James/Protestant) Version as did other students.
St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church is a historic church building in the Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia, just north of the Germantown neighborhood. The congregation was founded sometime before 1728 and three successive church buildings have occupied the same location since that time.

The first service in the wood-frame church in the St. Veronica Parish was held on September 22. The church was erected by parishioners of St. Michael's, 2nd and Master Street in West Kensington, who held services at the new chapel. It was attended to by priests as a mission for Saint Stephen's until 1879.
