The Man in Black (also called "The Smoke Monster" or simply "The Monster") is the main antagonist of the American ABC television series Lost. [1] [2] He appeared as a cloud of black smoke until the final episode of season five where he appeared as a middle-aged man dressed in black.
The Man in Black, in the form of Locke, attempts to recruit both Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell) and James "Sawyer" Ford (Josh Holloway) for his quest to leave the island. Sawyer realizes that the Man in Black is not Locke, because Locke was always scared and the Man in Black is not.
