Built in Brazil to a modified British design along with some U.S. equipment, they were built to replace six H-class destroyers (or Jurua class) ordered from Britain but purchased by Britain for use in the war. Due to design complications, the ships took a long time to complete, having been finished from 1949 to 1951.
The government maintained a sizeable naval force in the initial decades following independence. The navy was later involved in the Cisplatine War, the River Plate conflicts, the Paraguayan War as well as other sporadic rebellions that marked Brazilian history. By the 1880s, the Brazilian Imperial Navy was the most powerful in South America.

The Marcílio Dias-class destroyers (sometimes referred to as M class) were three destroyers of the Brazilian Navy that served during World War II. They were based on the United States Navy's Mahan class. They entered service in 1943 and served on Atlantic convoy duty with the Allies.

The Contestado War (Portuguese: Guerra do Contestado), broadly speaking, was a land war between rebel civilians and the Brazilian state's federal police and military forces. It was fought in a region rich in wood and yerba mate that was contested by the States of Paraná , Santa Catarina and even Argentina , from October 1912 to August 1916.

She was powered by 2 triple expansion reciprocating steam engines, driving two shafts, which developed a total of 7,403 indicated horsepower (5,520 kW) and gave a maximum design speed of 27 knots (50 km/h; 31 mph).
