These lenses are used for UV photography, as the quartz glass can be transparent at much shorter wavelengths than lenses made with more common flint or crown glass formulas. Fused quartz can be metallised and etched for use as a substrate for high-precision microwave circuits, the thermal stability making it a good choice for narrowband filters ...
Refractive index variation for SF11 flint glass, BK7 borosilicate crown glass, and fused quartz, and calculation for two Abbe numbers for SF11. The Abbe number, [ 1 ] V d , {\displaystyle V_{\mathsf {d}}\ ,} of a material is defined as
Unless stated otherwise, the properties of fused silica (quartz glass) and germania glass are derived from the SciGlass glass database by forming the arithmetic mean of all the experimental values from different authors (in general more than 10 independent sources for quartz glass and T g of germanium oxide glass). The list is not exhaustive.
Optical glass refers to a quality of glass suitable for the manufacture of optical systems such as optical lenses, prisms or mirrors.Unlike window glass or crystal, whose formula is adapted to the desired aesthetic effect, optical glass contains additives designed to modify certain optical or mechanical properties of the glass: refractive index, dispersion, transmittance, thermal expansion and ...
Silicon dioxide (SiO 2) is a common fundamental constituent of glass. Fused quartz is a glass made from chemically pure silica. [68] It has very low thermal expansion and excellent resistance to thermal shock, being able to survive immersion in water while red hot, resists high temperatures (1000–1500 °C) and chemical weathering, and is very ...

To be clear, fused quartz is a type of glass. It's just glass with higher silica content than normal (ideally 100%).--Srleffler 15:31, 19 April 2006 (UTC) This page would be better renamed to fused silica (and the text adjusted accordingly). "Fused quartz" is a misnomer, and leads to confusion. Quartz is a crystal. Fused silica is a glass.
