Hanyang University was founded as Dong-A Engineering Institute on July 1, 1939, during the Japanese occupation of Korea.Dong-A Institute started with 630 students and 35 faculty in Jongno District, Seoul.
Hanyang University College of engineering affects a lot in South Korea society. It was the oldest engineering college in South Korea. And it has been called as an "Engineer Academy". [5] Also there are many alumni in Korea society.

The college was renamed as Hanyang Women's College in 1998. In 2012 it attained university status, thus renamed as Hanyang Women's University. The university is a part of the Hanyang Foundation (한양학원) which also includes Hanyang University and a system of schools that educate children from kindergarten until high school.
