RAS syndrome, where RAS stands for redundant acronym syndrome (making the phrase "RAS syndrome" autological), is the redundant use of one or more of the words that make up an acronym in conjunction with the abbreviated form. This means, in effect, repeating one or more words from the acronym.
Ras, from "Rat sarcoma virus", is a family of related proteins that are expressed in all animal cell lineages and organs. All Ras protein family members belong to a class of protein called small GTPase, and are involved in transmitting signals within cells (cellular signal transduction).
Ras (fascism), a title for a regional leader in Ethiopia under fascist Italy; Ras (title), an Ethiopian aristocratic and court title, as in Ras Tafari; Ras cheese, a variety popular in Egypt; RAS syndrome, "redundant acronym syndrome" syndrome; Reasonable articulable suspicion, a burden of proof in the United States legal system
The five main families are Ras, Rho, Ran, Rab and Arf GTPases. [2] The Ras family itself is further divided into 6 subfamilies: Ras, Ral, Rap, Rheb, Rad and Rit. Miro is a recent contributor to the superfamily. Each subfamily shares the common core G domain, which provides essential GTPase and nucleotide exchange activity.
Activated Ras then activates the protein kinase activity of a RAF kinase. [4] The RAF kinase phosphorylates and activates a MAPK/ERK Kinase (MEK1 or MEK2). The MEK phosphorylates and activates a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). RAF and MAPK/ERK are both serine/threonine-specific protein kinases. MEK is a serine/tyrosine/threonine kinase.
While RAS originated as a hardware-oriented [citation needed] term, systems thinking has extended the concept of reliability-availability-serviceability to systems in general, including software: [4] Reliability can be defined as the probability that a system will produce correct outputs up to some given time t . The gene product of KRAS, the K-Ras protein, was first found as a p21 GTPase. [6] [7] Like other members of the ras subfamily of GTPases, the K-Ras protein is an early player in many signal transduction pathways. K-Ras is usually tethered to cell membranes because of the presence of an isoprene group on its C-terminus.
